The green pastures, pubs, sappy ballads, and of course, the sheep. It was time to visit my homeland, the Emerald Isle. Wait a minute, I’m Jewish; I meant my wife’s homeland (she’s one of 12). Yes, a Sullivan.
Anyhoo, the missus, our daughter and her buddy Meg (bright red hair/fit right inn) hit the ground running. Our route was a clockwise romp through rural Southern Ireland. The map below shows our stops along the way. Before I go any further, I need to mention the bomber weather. Great 65-degree temps, with sunny skies and beautiful sunsets. Where’s the famous rain? Woooo!
Just West of Schull lies the Mizen Peninsula and a remote hike to the Three Castle Head. Got there just as the sun was setting.
As we proceeded to Kenmare, the Sheen Falls Lodge provided a great dawn patrol option.
One of the more famous local estates in the area is the Bantry House.
Proceeding North, we enjoyed some of Ireland’s best hiking in Killarney National Park. Afterwards, it’s into town for a pint and the evening rainbow.
Shooting back out to the coast, we spent several days in Dingle, which features some pretty impressive oceanfront cliffs. Entering the area, we stopped by Minard Castle, which has obviously long since enjoyed its best days. This shot was taken with my trusty drone.

There are also plenty of hiking trails that follow the contour of the cliffs. Breathtaking views, along with some great seasonal wildflowers.
